6:30 AM. Back down at Tower 26 in Santa Monica. It’s the place to be on a Friday when Buoy Café is going on.
Every once in a while, for birthdays, race sendoff celebrations, and other miscellaneous reasons, a group of folks who regularly swim at Tower 26 in Santa Monica beach, drag out coffee and donuts to the buoy that is floating out in the middle of the bay. It’s a focal point and visual landmark in the water for everyone doing open water swimming here.
I first heard of this mythical adventure year or two ago during my triathlon training. I was never able to make it out there. Until this summer.
It’s pretty easy to sit and float out there. Most people are wearing wetsuits- which is like having a full-body flotation device on. you adjust your legs a bit and – viola! Its like your lounging at the beach — but a bit farther out there.
After a bit of relaxing and hanging around – I headed out with Jim, Donna, Jay and Kirk – and we swam a lap from the regular Bouy – to a Float set up byPur-Pak They swim every riday morning at tower 26 at 6:30 a.m. It s good to know that there are people doing regular open water swims – because, its not smart AT ALL to be heading out there for an Open Water Swim (OWS). And getting out is very
important for Triathlon Training – Expecially of you are going to be doing an Ironman 70.3 or Full IRonman race – you can’t NOT do it.
Tomorrow: 62 mile cycle from Irvine to Solano Beach – I’ll give you an update for that!
